坊主地獄正面入口 The entrance to Bozu jigoku
地獄入口で最初に目にします（上）、そして右側の
竹の柵で囲われた順路に従って廻ります。

奇観随一・風光明媚 天然坊主地獄
・・・と入場券に書いてあります。この地獄の説明は上の
看板（塗料が剥げかかってボロボロになっているのは熱泥
から出る成分と高温のせい? ）を読んで下さい。少しは観
光気分に・・・下記の注意書きを守ってくださいネ !
厳守 地獄は高熱（100℃前後）でありますので、のぞ
きこんだり、柵にもたれたり、柵内に入ったり、
絶対にしないで下さい。
子供さんは必ず手をひき、一人歩きはさせないで
下さい。 ・・・
平成の泥火山口
絶え間なく噴出する鉱泥は採取されて鉱泥温泉
として利用されます

地獄内の順路沿いには美しい庭園が・・
この様な形状をした熱泥噴出口が多数・・
約460年前の大爆発時の痕跡、直径約20m 高さ約15m の大窪地の底に泥火山口跡が見える(上）と、当時の石仏（下）

無色透明の単純泉と男女別露天風呂（灰色の泥湯）があります

History of the Bozu Jigoku

Long ago, there was a temple and its yard around here.
But about 470 years ago, the entire district experienced
a severe earthquake and then it suddenly happened to
erupt from under the floor of the temple which was built here.
The bonze of the temple was blown up into the air with his temple by the great eruption and fell into this pond
in which a huge quantity of gray mud boiled and seethed
with the extraordinary heat.
After then it has been colled bozu Jigoku (Boze hell)
as the surface phenomenon looks like the head of the bonze.
This jigoku has peculiar phenomena of mud volcano, therefore it is designated
as a natural monument.
This gray mud contains many excellent elements and
gives great effects to neuralgia, rheumatism, injuries, from traffic accidents,
high blood pressure and so on.
